Yoga is a physical, mental and spiritual discipline that denotes a variety of schools, practices and goals in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism, the best-known being Hatha yoga and Raja yoga. The origins of yoga have been speculated to date back to the fifth and sixth centuries B.C.E. Yoga was brought to the west by gurus from India in the late 19th and 20th centuries. In the 1980’s, yoga gained popularity as a physical exercise across the western world, but yoga is much more than just that – it has spiritual and meditative core which we do not fully understand.

The ultimate goal of yoga is moksha (liberation), though the exact definition varies according to the exact philosophical or theological system with which it is conjugated. There are many schools of yoga, each with myriad health benefits associated. Aside from the spiritual goals of yoga, the physical postures are used to alleviate health problems, reduce stress and make the spine supple.
