What is Aerial Yoga?
Aerial Yoga combines elements of traditional yoga with Pilates, dance, and acrobatic inspired movements. It is a low-impact form of yoga that of uses a silk hammock to allow students to achieve traditional postures that they may not be able to ordinarily attempt. The body is either partially or fully supported by the hammock throughout the practice. It’s a total body workout and a great way to both relax and have fun!
What are the benefits of Aerial Yoga?
There are so many benefits, both physical and mental, to practicing any yoga. Aerial Yoga in particular helps to: improve strength and flexibility, allows for spinal decompression, and is low impact and easy on the joints, making it a practice easily accessible to all.
Am I strong enough or flexible enough?
Anyone is strong and flexible enough for Aerial! You have the assisted silks so where you may not be super flexible, the silk works with you to deepen the stretch. In terms of strength, we use the silks in a gentle way to build strength. The short answer is yes, you are!
Will I fall?
Your instructors are trained to make sure that you’re safe through your practice. As always, listen to your body; your instinct will step in if you’re starting to feel unstable, but Aerial Yoga is all about building trust in yourself and your environment.
Can anyone participate?
Aerial Yoga is not generally recommended for anyone with: Low blood pressure, glaucoma, or pregnant women after their first trimester.
What is a class experience like?
Every class is different depending on the instructor and participants but you should always expect to lengthen, strengthen, work up a sweat, and have a great time!
What should I wear?
Any of your regular yoga clothing will do, but you may find it’s more comfortable to wear more fitted clothing. Long pants and covered torso are recommended for students with sensitive skin. No jewellery should be worn in the class.
Do I need to do anything to prep for class?
Arrive hydrated with a little food in your belly to combat dizziness.
Total body workout
Due to the nature of aerial yoga movements, almost all the body parts are forced to move and stretch. Muscles are toned and redefined, and joints are regenerated and strengthened due to these movements.
Just like almost any other workout, aerial yoga helps rebuild your emotional system because it clears the mind and relieves stress due to its meditative state. It also helps you combat stress throughout the day and increases your creativity, which leads you to develop your own artistic skills.
Aerial yoga helps you to move more freely, with less effort, by counteracting gravity. Suspension in the air releases tension on the bones and muscles, increasing flexibility and deepening your practice. Suspended yoga strengthens core muscles and increases spinal and shoulder flexibility.
