Anything you can do to clean up your home and environment is a step in the right direction. I get that not everyone is a DIY kind of person, but making a natural air freshener is one of the easiest, cheapest, and best smelling things you can do to clean up your space.
The biggest thing you hear about air fresheners is something called a phthalate and it’s not just in air freshener. Most scented products – lotions, perfumes, detergent, dryer sheets, sunscreen – contain phthalates, which have been shown to be cancer causing, disrupt the endocrine system, contribute to developmental issues in infants, and cause fertility issues. PLUS, a lot of air fresheners test positive for chemicals not listed on the label. Yikes!
Some say that exposure levels from a small spray of air freshener are too low for anything to actually have any negative effects. Maybe for that individual spritz, but is that the only source of chemicals in modern living? Far from it! Consider the disgusting mixture of all the chemicals you inhale, slather, lather, brush, wash, rinse and repeat — BEFORE you leave the bathroom! Most women, for example, are exposed to more than 150 chemicals from personal care products alone. Again, yikes!
Go natural with essential oils. Essential oils smell amazing, are dirt cheap, completely natural, pure and simple. This recipe uses essential oils to freshen the room, fabrics and furniture better than anything you find in the store and is only 3 ingredients (and one of them is water!). You can do a world of good for yourself and your environment by making this natural room spray for yourself.
- 6 oz water
- 1 oz rubbing alcohol
- 30 drops essential oils of your choice*
- Combine all ingredients into a spray bottle (ideally glass).
